Spreadsheets are generally the first step an organisation will make towards automation and in many ways can revolutionise the way they work. However, as the organisation grows, the number of spreadsheets tends to grow with it, leading to countless spreadsheets developed for a multitude of business functions. This is what we call “spreadsheet hell”.
What are the limitations of spreadsheets?
- They do not lend themselves well to multi-user access
- They can be difficult to manage across multiple offices
- Can you be confident that another user hasn’t deleted something they shouldn’t, or placed incorrect data into a cell?
- As they grow, they can experience data corruption issues
What can we do to help?
We have worked with a number of organisations to help move them from spreadsheets to a consolidated database, providing a more stable foundation for future growth. Our defined process involves taking the time to understand the function of each spreadsheet, and in turn design a process driven database to replace its functionality. This leads to a far more structured system that can scale well across multiple offices and accommodate simultaneous multi-user access.
